Lessons Save Lives
Tilly Smith, a 10-year-old British schoolgirl, who was holidaying in Thailand on 26 December 2004, is a spectacular example. She saved over 100 people by recalling, from a recent geography lesson, that water rapidly receding from the beach meant that great waves were on the way.

Tilly’s story shows that tsunami warning systems need to be underpinned by a wider education programme. Key to such a programme is the use of tsunami school curricula. For this reason, CDEMA, through the Tsunami and Other Coastal Hazards Warning System Project, has developed several tools for use by school teachers in the Caribbean classroom. These multi-media teaching tools and aids have been developed for the Caribbean by experts from a range of disciplines. The tools provide schools, teachers and by extension parents a set of flexible resources, which though targeted for the 12-15 yr age group, can be adapted to adequately teach children of any age.
